Joburg SCI Office Hosted a Condom Distribution activity in Duduza Informal settlement
Despite demonstrations of how to use the condom, the social mobilisers stressed the importance of reading the directions on the package. There were also instruction pamphlets.
On the day, 12000 male condoms and 300 female condoms were distributed, and the team met with over 70 people. Salons, tuck shops, and car washes were also targeted throughout the community.
According to Tumelo Sithole SCI Social Mobiliser, this was a positive activity, and the receivers were very forthcoming. Some bar owners requested three boxes, citing that their customers have been asking about condoms, Sithole said
The people we served
The reaction was overwhelming throughout the day: “we distributed condoms to young people in their teens, folks in their 40’s, and many elderly people.”
“The older citizen approached us to ask for boxes of condoms,” Sithole said when speaking of who approached who during the distribution when it came to the older folks.
Youth & Condoms
In most communities, having a condom in your hand or in your pocket as a woman or even thinking about sex is considered taboo. However, during the condom distribution, there were several persons who, while initially shy, had the bravery to request an equal number of male and female condoms.
"Dual contraceptives not only prevent unintended pregnancies, but they also safeguard and prevent sexually transmitted illnesses, or STIs.” concluded Program Officer Nondumiso Khethwa
