Samkelo is on a downward spiral… he’s struggling to find work and turns to drinking with vagrant friends at a shebeen. The clinic opening is in full swing and goes down smashingly, short of the arrival of a woman in labour. AB and Riri encounter a woman in the throes of labour on their rounds. The baby came early, but the two CHW’s handle it professionally. The healthy baby is born at the clinic.

According to the UNFPA framework for action on Youth and Adolescents, six thousand young people are infected with HIV each day, most of them young girls in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. HIV prevalence is also much higher among women (23%) in South Africa than in men (13%).
In a study of South African men who drink alcohol in informal drinking environments or "shebeens," researchers from The Miriam Hospital have found a high prevalence of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) that directly correlates to unprotected sex. Findings support the need for interventions targeting both alcohol and HIV-risk behaviors among South African men who drink alcohol in alcohol-serving venues. The study and its findings are published in the July issue of Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
